What are Head and Neck Cancers?

Head and neck cancers account for approximately 10% of all body cancers. Head and neck cancers, especially larynx; It covers cancers of the oral cavity, lips, inner part of the cheeks, gums, palate, tongue, floor of the mouth, nose, nasal passages, sinus cancers in the facial bones, cancers of the pharynx, auricle and external auditory canal, cancers of the entrance of the esophagus and salivary glands. Head and neck cancers are among the types of cancer that are easy to diagnose early and have a high treatment success rate. 

The contribution of smoking to Head and Neck cancers is high, as in all body cancers. Among the risks that increase cancers in this region, apart from exposure to cigarettes and tobacco products, alcohol and HPV virus, poor oral hygiene and malnutrition come first. It has also been shown that factors related to radiation therapy and nutrition are effective in the occurrence of the disease. Exposure to sunlight has an important place among the factors that cause lip and skin cancers.

The most common cancers of the larynx, lip and tongue are seen in Turkey. Head and neck cancers are approximately 5 times more common in men than in women. It is more common in older ages.  The majority of head and neck cancers show symptoms in the early stages. Early recognition of symptoms and evaluation of the patient by an ENT and Head and Neck Surgery Specialist are the most important factors that increase the chance of success in treatment. It should not be forgotten that appropriate treatment is only possible with early diagnosis.

How is Head and Neck Cancer Diagnosed?

The patient must first be examined by an ENT and Head and Neck Surgery Specialist. Detailed examination of the mouth, nasal cavity, ear, neck and salivary glands should be performed using an endoscope. Nowadays, thanks to endoscopic examination, we have the chance to see all diseased areas, making early diagnosis much easier. Then, if any, suspicious tissues are biopsied and sent to pathology for evaluation. 

Radiologically, imaging facilities such as Ultrasonography (USG), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance (MRI) and PET can be used.  

How to Plan the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancers?

The treatment of each patient is different. Multiple factors such as the location and stage of the disease, the patient’s age and other health problems are effective in treatment planning.

Treatment of Head and Neck cancers requires a multidisciplinary approach. Patients diagnosed with cancer should be evaluated in the tumor council. In the Tumor Council of Head and Neck Cancers:

• Pathology Specialist

The treatment plan is different for each patient. As we mentioned before, treatment type and planning should be made depending on the location of the tumor, the stage of the cancer, the age and socioeconomic status of the patient. While a single treatment option may be sufficient for patients in the early stages, combined treatments may be suitable for some patients.
